How to Prepare for a Career Fair

When employers descend upon campus looking to hire UBC students, will you be ready? UBC's Career Education team joins forces with superhero Chris Irveses to bring you a workshop that will get you trained, prepped, and ready in time for two upcoming career fairs.

Through an interactive workshop, we'll provide you with the effective skills, strategies, and superpowers you'll need to win over any potential employer. This session is open to all UBC students and alumni from all faculties.
Register at www.students.ubc.ca/workshops/careers.cfm.

Microsoft Résumé Contest

Hey Genius! Want a Prize?

Microsoft is looking for great candidates like you. You are smart, well-rounded, and well-networked across campus and we want to reward you for it. And it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. Here's how it works:

  1. Reach out to your friends and classmates whom you know would be great candidates for Microsoft.
  2. Ask them if you can submit their résumé for a full-time, co-op or internship position.
  3. Each résumé submitted is an entry for a raffle. The more résumés you submit, the more entries you get. It's that simple!

Prizes include: Xbox, Guitar Hero, Games and Software!

Rules and Details:

  • Entries must be current students seeking full-time, co-op or internship positions in Software Development or Software Development in Test.
  • You may not submit your own résumé—so get your pal to do it!
  • Résumés entered will not be considered if the candidate was interviewed by Microsoft during 2008 or has an interview already scheduled in 2009.
  • Contest deadline is Thursday, January 22nd.
  • Entries must be e-mailed to danielsi@microsoft.com.
  • Subject line should read CONTEST.
  • Entries will only be considered once and any duplicates will not be considered after the first entry.
  • One of our current UBC co-op students will be drawing the winning names.
  • Contest winners will be announced on Monday, January 26th.

CS volleyball team

This term the CSSS will be sponsoring a CPSC volleyball team. Days of play will not be known until after the registration (although they are usually Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons). If you're interested, send an email to: vps@thecube.ca along with your full name, student number, skill level and days you cannot play. Registration ends Jan. 13th. Space is limited.

Subversion hosting for students

This term the CSSS is offering a brand new service for all CS undergrads: free hosting of Subversion version control repositories for student projects.

Ever try to hack and hack at a function only to realize your original attempt was pretty close, but you can't get it back because you've spent the last three hours rewriting it? Ever work on a group project and get tired of sending e-mail back and forth with your code attached in zip files? Version control solves all of these problems by providing an Internet-accessible repository which stores not only the code you are currently working on, accessible to all group members, but also the entire history of your files so you can grab older versions if needed.

Head over to http://svn.thecube.ca/ and create an account. You get to create up to 5 repositories, each of which can grow up to 50MB. You can share access with as many other people as you wish, for group projects.

York Centre for Vision Research Vision Science Summer School

The Centre for Vision Research (CVR) at York University offers a one-week,
all-expenses-paid undergraduate summer school on the topic of vision science.
This year's program will be held from May 31 to June 6, 2009.

The program includes talks by CVR faculty members on current research topics in
vision science, as well as hands-on projects in CVR laboratories. The
curriculum reflects the wide range of research areas at CVR, which includes
basic research on vision in humans and animals, covering both neuroscience and
behaviour, as well as applied topics such as computer vision, virtual reality,
visual perception in low-gravity environments, and vision in clinical
populations. For an idea of the topics to be covered, see last year's schedule
at http://yorku.ca/cvrss/schedule2008.pdf.

For full details, see the poster and the main website.

What does Science mean to YOU?

Thunderbots Looking for AI and IR Programmers

The UBC Thunderbots have an opening for a senior AI lead. We also have room for both AI and IR team members.

The UBC Thunderbots is a student team dedicated in creating autonomous soccer playing robots to compete internationally at the Robocup competition and conference, held this year in Austria.

Taking on the position would give an opportunity to work with advanced AI and possibly IR. Our prototypes would be ready by January, there would be a chance to directly apply the programming to the robot. There is also a chance for a cheap (or possibly free) chance to go to Austria in the summer.

Our AI team currently is rather small and slightly inexperienced (compared to our over-large ElectroMech teams) and we are looking to recruit heavily this second term. Most likely we feel that we would get more younger students, so we're looking for someone with good leadership ability with some good understanding of AI to organize everybody second term.

The time commitment is varried on how well the person can delegate tasks and how good the person is with programming AI. There are meetings every Saturday, but there are options for the software teams (AI and IR) to meet on seperately.

If you're interested, please contact Amanda Li at <amanda.crystal.li@gmail.com>.

The theme for this year's industry panel is How To Prepare Yourselves to be Future Leaders in the IT Field. The CS department is very fortunate to have recruited a number of senior industry leaders to share their experience with you, including the VP of SAP (former Business Objects), the CTO of Radical, the VP of Translink, and senior managers from IBM and Accenture.

Food and beverages will be provided!
